Fusion of the modern and the traditional

a

Kyoto is a treasure trove of time-honored traditional arts and crafts that have been passed down over the centuries. The epitome of omotenashi is personified in the craftsmen working in workshops that have remained unchanged for centuries, painstakingly producing traditional artifacts one piece at a time, in the spirit and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Feel for yourself this age-old spirit by visiting these craftsmen, and you are sure to be able to touch the authentic spirit of omotenashi.

However, Kyoto's artistic attractions are not limited to the history and tradition: Kyoto is also home to a wealth of contemporary art and modern architecture, as well as unique collaborations of historical settings and modern design that can not be found anywhere else. Set against the backdrop of this ancient capital, the city's modern art and architecture all the more striking.

The pride of Japanese craft art

zouhikozouhiko

A unique type of lacquerware decorated with gold powder, called "JAPAN", is known all over the world. The techniques of lacquer craft have flourished since their creation in the Heian Period over 1300 years ago. While at the same time preserving the ancient traditions of the craft, new techniques and modern aesthetics have been incorporated in to its production across the ages, creating an example of true craft art. Many of these pieces, such as hand mirrors and bowls, are items that can be used in daily life.
